The inscription on the tiles reads: allahu al-baqi wa al-kull fani 1054, (God is eternal and everyone is perishable 1054).

A pair of almost identical tiles with the same inscription was sold in Sotheby's London, 5 April 2006, lot 142. Tiles in a very similar technique and colouring containing an inscription in honour of Akbar were sold in these Rooms 14 October 1997, lot 387. A similar tile, with nasta'liq inscription, is in the David Collection (Kjeld von Folsach, Art from the World of Islam, Copenhagen, 2001, no.290, p.196). Similar nasta'liq inscribed tiles were also with Spink (Passion and Tranquility, London, 1998, nos.43 and 44).
