Comparable textiles in terms of design, featuring five carnations flowerheads, and floral arcades, can be found executed in cut and voided velvet, (P. Pal (ed.), Islamic Art; The Nasli M. Heeramaneck Collection, Los Angeles, 1973, p.203, no. 428; Donald King and Michael Goedhuis, Imperial Ottoman Textiles, London, 1980, pp.38-39, no. 19). The difference here in technique suggests that our velvet may have been a more provincial interpretation of a popular design.
