Although unsigned, this large carbon print of the Matterhorn has strong similarities with Ponting's later work on Scott's Terra Nova expedition, for which he is best known. His Alpine work, from his 1908 trip to Switzerland and France (see lot 256) is little-known and apparently barely documented. There are however striking similarities with Ponting's beautiful and richly printed large carbon prints from the Antarctic in 1911, both in terms of the quality of the print itself, and in terms of carefully arranged composition, perfectly balanced and framed by this most fastidious of 'camera artists'.
