Trial Patterns A series of marketing 'trial' patterns were produced between 1881-1887, following John Bell's death. These early patterns were unregistered but soon became successful and were widely exported to South East Asia. Most patterns were eventually produced in numerous colour combinations involving red, green and blue. This was to become a feature of later production.
