Napoleon III of France, (1808-1873) was the last monarch to rule France. A nephew of Napoleon I, he evoked his memory to become president of the Second Republic in 1848. In 1851 he staged a coup and made himself dictator and then in 1852 Emperor of the Second Empire. He aided in the unification of Italy and was deposed after his defeat in the Franco-Prussian in 1870.
