Carlo Alberto, King of Sardinia, (1798-1849) succeeded his cousin Carlo Felici in 1831. During the revolutions of 1848 he enacted the Statuto Albertino, a constitution that formed the basic frame-work for the Italian legal system that survived until 1946. He was defeated at the Battle of Custoza in 1848 and forced to sign an armistice, which he broke until defeated again by Josef Radetzky in 1849. As a result, he abdicated in favour of his son Vittorio Emanuele II, (1820-1878) and went into exile in Portugal where he died in 1849.
