In 1790, this useful form of extending dining or breakfast table, fitted with sliding leaves beneath the top, was designated a 'Universal' table in Messrs Gillow of London and Lancaster's Sketch Book (No.572); and was given the same name in Thomas Sheraton's The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterers Drawing Book London, 1793.
