THE PROPERTY OF THE HUNTER BLAIR FAMILY JAMES WATTERSON HERALD (1859-1914) Lots 136-141 Watterson Herald was born in Forfar, the son of a shoemaker. He received little formal training although he attended Herkomer's School in Bushey where he met William Nicholson and James Pryde. The influence of Arthur Melville, whom he may have met, can be seen in Herald's work. After a period of commercial success Herald moved north to Arbroath where he settled for the rest of his life. He developed his very personal style of 'blottesque' technique and excelled in capturing both colour and a sense of vitality that can be seen in the present works.
