This is the only known Winchester Quart, The crowned C verification mark is for the reign of Charles II as verified in a letter to Mr. Minchin from the Library of the Institute of Weights and Measures Administration, Eastbourne. In the same letter the author discusses the Winchester measures as being grain or dry measures as opposed to ale or wine measures. Although there is confusion as to the exact specifications, the Winchester gallon had a capacity of around 270 cubic inches, a little smaller than the ale gallon of 280 cubic inches but larger than the Wine gallon of 231 Cubic inches. The inscription on the measure relating to the Winchester quart at the Guildhall was to distinguish it from the smaller wine measure and possibly the ale measure also.
