Best known as a painter of historical scenes, William Frederick Yeames was a member of the 'St. John's Wood Clicque.' Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1874, the present work is set in medieval Florence and depicts figures standing in the courtyard of the Bargello. Three small children stand at the bottom of the principle staircase making an appeal to the Podesta, the local governor who stands at the top of the stairs.
