William Scott, 1st Baron Stowell (1745 -1836) was the elder brother of John Scott, 1st Earl of Eldon. In 1783 he was appointed registrar of the Court of Faculties. In 1788 he was appointed Judge of the Consistory Court and Advocate-General. He was also Knighted. In 1798 he was made judge of the High Court of Admiralty and upon the coronation of George IV in 1821 he was raised to the peerage as 1st Baron Stowell.
