The passenger ship in the present lot shows the colours black and yellow which are emblematic of the Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland. This Amsterdam based shipping company was founded in 1870 and mainly operated a paggenger and cargo service between the Indonesian colonies and The Netherlands. Until this time, most ships on this route were sailingvessels and the relatively late introduction of steamships was not always uncomplicated.

When the Noordzeekanaal opened in 1876 connecting Amsterdam to the North Sea, the heavy metal ships had much easier access to the North Sea. This resulted in the building of large warehouses along the Oostelijke Handelskade which can still be seen today.
