In keeping with the regional preference of Boston cabinetmakers for restrained ornament, this chest-on-chest displays gilt pinwheel terminals, a carved and partially gilt shell, a shaped drop pendant and ogee bracket feet. The engaged quarter columns contribute to the overall sense of verticality of the piece.

Elements of the carved shell are related to those on chest-on-chests from Boston, including a small number of examples attributed to Benjamin Frothingham Jr. (1734-1809) of Charlestown, Massachusetts.
