With its double writing-surface, this Louis XVI bureau plat bears a particularly unusual feature which is explained by the use of a writing surface by both the owner of the piece and his secretary. It relates to the celebrated bureau plat by Philippe Claude Montigny, which shows a single-writing slide, sold, Christie's, New York, 30 June 1986, lot 204.

This ormolu-mounted bureau plat is stamped by Pierre III Migeon (1733-1775), son of the famous ébéniste Pierre II Migeon and member of the foremost dynasty of 17th and 18th Century ébénistes. Pierre III was received maître in 1761, by special derogation from the statuts corporatifs or regulations which had since 1743 been amended to specifically exclude non Catholic craftsmen from the maîtrise.
