the diseased male figure with bloated belly, covered with inflammed sores, leaning and supported by his left hand, the right hand placed to the back of his thigh, adorned with jewelry and striated coiffure, painted overall in reddish brown.

It has been suggested that such diseased figures might suffer from yaws, a treponemal skin infection occuring primarily in tropical climates.
