The flowered and reeded display-stand, for an objet d'art, is designed in the George II 'picturesque' fashion with serpentined angle-brackets rising from garlanded pillars; while Roman acanthus enriches its altar-plinth's triumphal-arched stretcher and volute-scrolled trusses. It relates in particular to tripod candlestand patterns, such as those issued in Thomas Chippendale's, Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754 (pl. 122).

A related stand was at Sharpham, Devon and recently with Malletts (2004). The latter featured a tripod base and was fitted with a rectangular platform which supported a 'tempietto' with florally-wreathed columns (as in the present table's columns), worked entirely from a variety of naturally-coloured shells.
