Hall chairs with a closely related fluted leg profile with distinctive 'raised block' set with a patera on each leg, were commissioned by George Brodrick, 4th Viscount Midleton (d. 1836) for Peper Harow, Sussex from the Golden Square firm of John Mayhew and William Ince whose lengthy partnership lasted from 1758/59 until 1804. A pair of hall chairs from this set was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 11 February 1999, lot 5. Three further pairs from Peper Harow were sold anonymously, Christie's, New York, 15 April 2005, lots 220-222.
