This pattern of chair back was invented by Gillows of Lancaster, circa 1785 and was referred to by them as a 'Camel back' chair (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 260).
Individual examples of late 18th century painted chairs seem to have been prized by early 20th century collectors, who tended to focus on exceptional examples of mid-18th century carved mahogany, as advised by R. W. Symonds. Another, similar chair was in the collection of the Symondsian collector James Thursby Pelham and was sold by a descendant of his, Christie's, London, 7 July 1994, lot 161 (£5,750).
