A Japanese rectangular lacquer gaming box and cover, 19th century
with shaped feet and metal handles, the cover decorated with a roundel of trailing kiku sprays and foliage on a nashiji ground, the interior containing ten lacquer compartments, each with rectangular wooden gaming counters, onlaid in gold lacquer with bamboo, wisteria, trailing leafy branches, crane and mon, the reverses with single characters -- the box 6½in. (16.5cm) long.
