Ben Johnson (c.1572-1637) was a Renaissance dramatist, actor and poet. Best known for his plays Volpone and The Alchemist, he was a strong influence on Jacobean and Caroline poets. A friend and rival of William Shakespeare, and a man of invention and great wit, Johnson was a dominant influence in shaping English theatre following the reopening of the theatres that followed the restoration of Charles II.
