Gilbert Holiday (1879-1937) was a keen horseman and painted equestrian scenes of almost every sort, including racing, hunting, polo, coaching and show jumping. He was highly regarded by his contemporaries, particularly Charles Johnson Payne (Snaffles) and Lionel Edwards, with whom he often shared a studio and who commented that 'no one can, or ever could, paint a horse in action better than Gilbert could' (S. Mitchell, The Dictionary of Equestrian Artists, London, 1985, p.270).
