Au Salon de 1765, l'artiste exposa une Sainte Famille sous le numéro 26 qui est peut-être notre tableau et que Diderot décrivit ainsi: 'la Vierge tient l'Enfant Jésus tout nu sur ses bras, et le présente à saint Joseph. La Vierge regarde Joseph et Joseph regarde l'enfant' (Diderot, Salons, II, rééd. 1979, p. 93).
