The grate with its urn-capped and herm-tapered pilasters reflects the George III antique or 'columbarium' fashion promoted by the architect Robert Adam (d.1796). Related pilasters feature on a steel dog-grate acquired in 1911 by the Victoria & Albert Museum (museum no. M492) (see A.Kelly. The Book of English Fireplaces, 1968 fig.75) attributed to the Smithfield metalworker Henry Jackson.
