The rounded rectangular twin-flap top, with a central section enclosing a games compartment with a sunken velvet-lined backgammon surface, the underside of the removable slide with chess board, the frieze with geometric brass inlay enclosing two mahogany-lined drawers and two simulated drawers to the reverse, joined by a part-reeded turned baluster stretcher, on plinths with scrolled corbels, on brass paw feet with brass caps and castors, stamped 'GILLOWS./LANCASTER', the underside of the drawer with craftman's inscription 'ERyi...(?)', handles replaced

A nearly identical table dispaying the same stamp 'GILLOWS./LANCASTER' was sold anonymously, Phillips, London, 21 November 2000, lot 71. A comparable amboyna sofa table with similar scrolled feet and turned stretcher was sold anoymously, Christie's, London, 8 July 1999, lot 45 (£15,525). Though the latter table was unmarked it can now be firmly attributed to Gillows on the basis of the current lot and the other sofa table, both stamped by Gillows.
