The rectangular top with three-quarter fretwork gallery with later urn finials, above a cavetto-moulded frieze with egg-and-dart moulding and a pair of geometrically-glazed doors enclosing two later glass shelves and a silk-lined interior, flanked by recessed bevelled mirror panels with fretwork, the lower section with three mahogany-lined drawers, the central drawer with a slide, on square blind-fret legs headed by pierced angle-brackets, the handles replaced

Related 'China-Case' patterns were published in Thomas Chippendale's, Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754 (3rd ed. 1762). This cabinet's mosaiced glazing pattern, incorporating flowered quatrefoils amongst lozenge-trellis, reflects contemporary Chinese taste, as also featured in patterns for palings and gates issued in E. Hoppus, The Gentleman and Builder's Repository, 1760 (pls. 86 and 89). Its serpentined handle pattern, with embossed and scalloped cartouche, was also adopted for a bookcase manufactured by Chippendale in 1759 with a glazing pattern he had published in his 1754 Director (pl. 104) (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, fig. 63).
