Teddy Edward, later known as Uncle Edward, belonged to Miss Alfreda Alice Annie Elderfield (1907-1994), from Hither Green Lane, S.E. London. The bear was a first birthday present from Alfreda's devoted parents. During Alfreda early years she devised stories and games and even a family tree for Edward's perpetuation. Cards were sent to Edward and photographs were taken of both Edward and Alfreda indicating the importance of their friendship. Alfreda Elderfield trained to teach and remained a spinster. She devoted her working life to children. During World War II she taught at Prendergast Preparatory school. After the war she pursued a career working with handicapped youngsters and continued to use her artistic and linguistic skill through plays performed with her own home made puppets and Uncle Edward.

Proceeds from the sale of Uncle Edward will be donated to St. Mary's Church, Lewisham, London.
