An album of 27 pen, ink and watercolour drawings (210 x 155mm) on J. Whatman wove paper, all signed ('Howitt'), and with pencilled captions below. 20th-century red half morocco.
AN INTERESTING ALBUM OF 27 ORIGINAL WATERCOLOURS BY HOWITT: comprising a title-page announcing 'Thirty Drawings of British Birds, usually shot for the Table', 23 watercolours of birds (among them: Wood Grouse, Snipe, Red Legged Partridge, Blue Winged Shoveler), and 3 other animals (Hare, Badger, Otter). Samuel Howitt, known for his oils and watercolours of sporting, topographical and animal subjects, is closely associated with the figure of Thomas Rowlandson, his brother-in-law, who had a direct influence on Howitt's early style and technique. Howitt himself transferred his paintings and drawings into highly-detailed and finely-executed engravings for publications including British Preserve (1824), and The British Sportsman (1806).
