Classique final, env. 550-950 après J.C.
Vase en terre cuite de taille exceptionnelle dont les paroies bombées sont recouvertes d'un engobe brun, rouge et orangé et sur lesquelles sont peintes des représentations animales de jaguar, chiens et cerf placées chacune devant des jarres de produits hallucinogènes et surmontées d'une série de glyphes qui indiquent après un glyphe d'introduction que ce vase était pobablement utilisé à l'origine pour la consommation du cacao.

IMPRESSIVE MAYAN POLYCHROME VESSEL
LATE CLASSIC, CA. A.D. 550-950

Of unusual size, the slightly rounded walls painted with a frieze consisting of two seated jaguars, one holding a cup, a seated deer with eye hanging from the socket and a seated coyote, before each a large enema jar with the clyster resting on top, surrounded around the rim with a band of glyphs including an introductory glyph, one representing 'sanctification' and the glyph for cacao; painted in orange and deep orange and black, with an ancient repair at the rim.

The hieroglyph for the treasured chocolate beverage is formed by three syllabic signs, ka-ka-wa. The hieroglyphs preceding it often describe the various flavors. There was a bitter and sweet cacao, fruity cacao, and even chili-flavored cacao.
Dried cacao beans were also a precious commodity, and traders took them as far as to Teotihuacan in central Mexico.

Le hiéroglyphe pour indiquer le précieux breuvage chocolaté est composé des trois signes syllabiques ka-ka-wa et le hiéroglyphe qui précède indique souvent les différents types de saveurs. On pouvait en effet trouver du cacao au goût amer ou doux, fruité ou épicé. Les fèves fraîches de cacao étaient aussi d'une grande maniabilité et les commerçants les transportaient aussi loin qu'à Téotihuacan, dans le centre du Mexique.
