Vase cérémoniel en terre cuite noire lustrée reposant sur une base tripode à grelots et composé d'un récipient aux formes arrondies incisé sur le pourtour avec un panneau comprenant la représentation d'une tête de profil stylisée évoquant un saurien surnaturel à long nez qui est souvent le symbole de la terre flottant dans les eaux sombres du monde souterrain, et surmonté d'un couvercle circulaire avec une poignée en relief représentant un beau cormoran à crête et au long cou dont on remarque les yeux ronds et encerclés caractéristiques et le bec discret en avant et lui même encadré sur le dessus du couvercle par la représentation richement incisée de deux ailes déployées de sauriens au plumage festonné.

MAYAN BLACKWARE LIDDED VESSEL OF A WATER BIRD
EARLY CLASSIC, CA. A.D. 250-450

Supported by hollow tripod legs filled with rattles, the rounded vessel incised on each side with a panel enclosing the stylized profile head of a supernatural long-nosed saurian, often a symbol of the Earth, floating in the Underworld's dark waters, the circular lid molded with an elegant, long-necked, crested cormorant as the handle with distinctive circular, rimmed eyes and tapering, attenuated beak, flanked on the lid by richly incised, outspread saurian-bird wings with scalloped feathers.

The oldest member of the celebrated Palenque Triad, often identified as the Sun God and associated with Venus, is sometimes represented as having a water bird headdress. This symbolic creature held a pre-eminent status in the mythology of the Maya. As with all water birds, cormorants (see Fig. 1) can thrive in all three of the Maya worlds: the sky, the terrestrial waters and on the earth.

Le représentant le plus ancien de la Triade vénérée à Palenque et souvent identifié comme le Dieu Soleil associé à Vinus est parfois représenté avec une coiffure à oiseau marin et cette créature symbolique jouissait d'un statut privilégié dans la mythologie maya. Comme tous les oiseaux marins, le cormoran pouvait être aussi bien à son aise dans les trois types de mondes que connaissaient les Maya : le ciel, l'eau et la terre.
