ENSENCOIR
Teotihuacan, style escuinta, période classique, env. 450-650 après J.C.
Encensoir en terre cuite lustrée reposant sur une haute base cylindrique décorée d'une bande centrale ornementale et d'appendices allongés sur les côtés, et surmonté d'un couvercle comportant un encadrement rectangulaire en façade de temple avec à l'intérieur de la partie centrale un masque représentant une divinité Teotihuacan à la bouche couverte par un grand ornement nasal en forme de papillon et aux oreilles ornées de grands pendentifs circulaires, encadré d'éventails en plumes et surmonté par une haute coiffure à appliques dites adornos qui comportent un rangée de rosettes frangées de plumes et un masque stylisé de hibou dans la partie supérieure ; peintures de couleurs rouge-orange, jaune moutarde, vert jaune, blanche et noire.

ESCUINTLA STYLE, CLASSIC, CA. A.D. 450-650
With a deeply waisted cylindrical base applied with a decorative central bow and side flanges, the domed lid supporting the rectangular framework of a temple facade with a mask of a Teotihuacan deity recessed within, the mouth covered by a large butterfly nose ornament and sporting large ear ornaments with circular pendants, flanked by plumed fans, surmounted by a tall headdress with applique adornos including a row of feather-trimmed rosettes and a stylized owl's mask above, painted in red-orange, mustard yellow, lime green, white and black.
Such clay censers were used to burn incense such as copal which was placed in the bowl of the lower half. Yet it seems the emphasis was not the function of the braziers but on the scene that was constructed on top. These works of layered complexity were associated with the rituals of the elite as practiced in their palace compounds as well as offerings in their burials.
