Morocco, second half 13th century
Comprising a section of a long beam, the face carved with strapwork forming an angular cartouche containing dense scrolling entwined foliate arabesques around a raised kufic inscription, one side with a stellar panel containing a rosette, traces of plaster and polychrome decoration, damages, incomplete, slight worming

The inscription is difficult to decipher. The most probable reading is ... q a[l]-qa'im mawlahu (... steadfast, his protector/Lord).

The style of scrolling arabesques and kufic calligraphy is very close to that of a Merinid beam dated to the late 13th century in the Musée des Arts et Traditions, Fez (Maroc, Les Trésors du Royaume, exhibition catalogue, Paris, 1999, no.196, p.141).
