The court house at Bow Street was founded in 1840 by Sir Thomas de Veil. Ten years later, under the leadership of Henry Fielding, the original eight Bow Street Runners became London's first band on constables.

This present watercolour depicts the procession of convicts leaving from Bow Street and being led to the Bridewell debtors prison, which was at that time located in Bride Lane.
