Celebrated for her wide-ranging, rich and varied oeuvre, Jessie Marion King had a long and successful career as both a book illustrator and designer of Glasgow Style jewellery, ceramics and textiles. She maintained that an artist should always follow one's individual vision rather than copying and retained her technique of using her 'inner-eye' to create imaginative designs throughout her life.

This present drawing and lot 126, are examples of King's characteristic use of nib pen and ink on vellum. Whilst stylistically she does not relate to the 'Spook School', her work does share distinctive motifs and linear affinities with the Glasgow Style. Striking in their minute detail and small scale, these two works almost certainly relate to a commission for a set of book illustrations, the publication is as yet untraced.
