The Great Hall at Fawsley was built in the 16th Century for Sir Edmund Knightley. During this period, the Knightley Family were known to being opposed to the unlimited power of the King. It is believed that the term 'sub rosa' originated at Fawsley from the flower in the centre of the ceiling of the bay window in the Great Hall, above which is the secret room where Puritan meetings were held.
