Shackleton's southern march from 29 October 1908 to 4 March 1909 covered '1755 miles 209 yards, statute, this including relay work and back marches' as recorded on his sledge meters. He was the first ever to navigate the Beardmore Glacier and the Polar Southern Plateau, attaining his extraordinary farthest South with Wild, Marshall and Adams on 9 January 1909 just under 100 miles short of the Pole.
