According to Ovid, the huntress Atlanta challenged suitors by making them race against her. She remained unbeaten until Hippomenes ran against her and dropped three golden apples, given to him by Venus. Atlanta could not resist stopping to pick them up and lost the race. Later they became lovers and were turned into lions by Cybele.
