These types of boxes are attributed to the Northern Russian coastal city of Kholmogory, located near Archangel, renowned for trading in walrus ivory. An additional craft trade developed in the 18th century and by the early 19th century pieces were incorporating motifs imported from western European fashions; swags, fluting and pierced scrolling floral rinceaux, all of which are typical neo-classical motifs. These designs reached this region through carvers who customarily trained in Moscow, especially St. Petersburg, for several years and then returned to their native region.
