The firm of Thomire & Cie was established by Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843), certainly one of the most important bronziers, he had trained under Pajou and Houdon at the Académie de Saint-Luc and later under the bronzier Gouthière. Known as Thomire & Cie from 1819, the company ceased in the early 1850's.
Louis Moinet (d. 1853), who had worked for the most celebrated watchmaker, Abraham Louis Breguet, collaborated with Thomire on a number of commissions.
Thomire's drawing for this clock, dated before 1817, is in the Nationalmuseum Stockholm (ill. H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p. 344, ill. 5.5.8) and models of this clock are in various important collections, including the Hermitage, St Petersburg, and the Palacio Real in Madrid (J.R. Colon de Carvajal, Catalogo de Relojes del Patrimonio National, Madrid, 1987, cat.243, p.258).
