In 1881 the Egyptian army mutinied against the Khedive of Egypt forcing him to appoint Said Ahmed Arabi Minister of War. Arabi demanded that foreigners be driven out of Egypt, calling for the massacre of Christians. This prompted an armed British response under Lieutenant-General Wolseley culminating in the battle of Tel El Kebir, 13 September, 1882.
