FIRST EDITION of 'the first English book on pollution' (DNB), announcing Evelyn's commitment to the improvement of public life. Evelyn suggested planting trees to remedy London's failing air quality. He also served on various civic minded committees: for licensing hackney coaches (1663), reforming the streets (1662-4), regulating the Royal Mint and Gresham College (1663), repairing St Paul's Cathedral (1666), and even for replanning London after the great fire.
