EXTREMITE DE BATON CEREMONIEL
Chan Chan, env. 1100-1400 après J.C.
Terminaison de bâton cérémoniel de forme trapézoïdale, fendue sur les côtés et contenant des grelots, richement sculptée sur chaque face d'une représentation de tête de guerrier portant un haut couvre-chef ajouré incrusté d'un guerrier se tenant debout et encadré de créatures zoomorphes. L'ensemble est richement incrusté de nacre et coquillage de spondylus orange et le bâton est manquant.

CHIMU WOOD FINIAL
CHAN CHAN, CA. A.D. 1100-1400
Of flaring trapezoidal form, slit at the sides and filled with rattles, richly carved on each side with a 'classic 'warrior's' head wearing a tall, openwork headdress inlaid with a standing warrior flanked by zoomorphic creatures, the whole richly inlaid with mother-of-pearl and orange spondylus, staff lacking.
Such ceremonial staffs with rattles descend from the long tradition of Andean interest in music-drums, trumpets, pan flutes and rattles. Depicted in ceramics they are proof of the varied instruments that were commonly used.
