As a young man Harlow spent a year training with Sir Thomas Lawrence. He showed great promise and is best known for his portraits in the manner of his master, with an emphasis on eyes and red lips as in this present drawing. His portraits are said to be good likenesses. Harlow exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1804. In 1818 he went to Italy to study old masters, but sadly died within a month of his return to England at the age of thirty two.
