We are grateful to Alexandra Harris for pointing out that the present watercolour was a favourite drawing of Paul Nash, who thought it showed Girtin as 'the most architectural of our painters'. Nash reproduced it in a 1937 journal article illustrating British painting at its best.

This drawing dates from circa 1794-5 and originates from a sketching tour of Kent, when Turner made sketches at Canterbury, Rochester and Dover. A drawing of The Inner Harbour, Dover was sold Christie's, London, 28 November 2000, lot 162.
