The Westminster Fire Office was founded in 1717 and the badge of office originated from a design supplied by Roger Askew, a director. The portcullis was taken from the arms of the City of Westminster, and the feathers as a compliment to the Prince of Wales, later King George II. The Prince of Wales insured six of his properties with the Office during it's first year in business.
