The pose and design of the figures on these candelabra closely match the model sketches in the 1761 livret of Gabriel de Saint-Aubin (H.Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel, et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p. 254, fig. 4.7.1 and p. 284, fig. 4.14.11). Saint-Aubin's drawings provided inspiration for illustrious sculptors and ciseleur-doreurs like Etienne-Maurice Falconet and François Rémond. Examples following Falconet's design include a three-branch lily candelabra in the Royal Castle in Warsaw (SZM 407/3-4) (ibid. p. 254, fig. 4.7.3), while a closely related pair of candelabra, with single figures holding aloft lily spray candlearms, was sold from the celebrated collection of Baron Guy de Rothschild, Sotheby's, Monaco, 26 May 1975, lot 242. A pair of candelabra, after François Rémond, with identical nymph figures, was sold from the Estate of Doris Merrill Magowan, Christie's, New York, 22 May 2002, lot 209.
