This composition derives from Pater's original, formerly in the Benjamin Stern Collection, New York (see F. Ingersoll-Smouse, Pater, Paris 1928, p. 124, no. 56, reproduced) although with a number of variations, notably to the distant landscape on the left of the scene, and in the inclusion of the girl on the extreme right of the composition.
