Immigrants from Maidstone, England comprised a portion of the early settlers of East Hampton and it is likely the Gardiner's acquired this clock through a marriage with another founding family.

A late eighteenth century tall-case clock also owned in the Gardiner family and signed, R. Cutbush, Maidstone is in the collections of the East Hampton Free Library.
