JOHANNES DE VERDENA (d. 1437). Sermones 'Dormi secure' de tempore. [Louvain: Johannes de Westfalia, between 8 April 1476 and November 1477].
Chancery 2° (278 x 203 mm). Gothic type, double column, 16th-century decoration, large gothic initials in red and brown, small initials and capital strokes in red. (Few margins repaired, repair removed in p1, light stains in two leaves.) 18th-century gold-tooled calf over pasteboard, spine gilt in compartments, green leather label, marbled endpapers and edges (lightly scuffed, one corner a little worn.) Provenance: early manuscript and drawings in brown and red on the first blank -- Ninive, Library (inscription) -- Mark Lansburg Collection (booklabel).
Probably the first edition, preceding an undated Cologne edition of c.1477. This collection of sermons was widely used and went through more than 32 editions from 1476 to 1501. Its title, 'Dormi Secure', refers to the secure sleep of the preacher who, instead of spending all the night writing his own sermon for the Sunday mass, could use one from this collection.
