The globular ruby glass body with leaf and flower decorated mounts, with a mask and leaf scroll handle - 4in. (10.2cm.) long.

Another example with more elaborate mounts was sold Christie's Amsterdam, 16 November 1999, lot 624.

The technique for producing ruby glass was first published in 1679 by Johann Kunckel (1630-1703) in his treatise Ars vitraria experimentalis. The ruby colour was derived from a precipitate of gold, making the pieces particularly desirable as both gold and ruby were believed to have magical powers.
