Frederick VI, the eldest son and successor of his father, Landgrave Frederick V, married Elizabeth, daughter of George III of England, in 1818. He began his military career in the Austrian Army against the Turks in 1789 and distinguished himself in the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. He was taken prisoner by Marshal Ney at the Battle of Elchingen.
